Cocktail dress + Button down

I’ve been very inspired lately to step up my style. Everything is fair game. Influencers have been experimenting with layering, mixing high end with low end, bold jewelry, and even “ugly” shoes. The fun part about today’s trends is that there’s nothing that’s out of style right now! Some of my favorite bloggers have been layering button downs under their dressier clothes, so I wanted to give it a try!

This For Love and Lemons dress was a fiiiiind. I scored it on their site on sale for $150, but right now it’s on sale for just under $190 and there are only XS and S left! Go a size up if you can. It’s so fun and flirty and is the perfect combo of girly and edgy, just how I like it 🙂 .

Everything in this look besides the dress is old. Oops. But this just goes to show that you can revamp all your old basics with fun pieces like this dress!

I used the gross grain ribbon in my hair to match the waist ribbon on the dress. Influencers like Julia Engel from Gal Meets Glam started wearing ribbons again, and I think it’s the cutest thing… but only if you do it minimally. No need to dig through your middle school closet to retrieve your bedazzled bows.

I love the contrast of the tailored shirt with the ruffled skirt. Because the dress has so much movement, I wanted a very structured bag, boot, and classic earrings to tone it down. And how cool is this wood hexagon bag?! I got it from French Connection about three years ago and it’s one of my favorites. You can find a similar one here.

Note on the dress size: It runs very small! I bought an XS thinking that it wouldn’t be so fitted. Despite how the shape of the dress appears, it is very fitted. And very short!! I’m 4’11 and this is super short on me.

Other styling options:

  1. throw on a cool moto jacket and some oxfords (on sale for $49!!) to dress it down
  2. wear the dress as is (obviously) with a killer pair of heels and a statement earring
